The cold, late autumn winds have brought several birds to the feeders in the River Valley. In the past, rain preceding the cold front would cause problems with my bird feeders. The seeds would get damp, which wasn’t a problem if they could dry out in a day or two.
However, the plastic sides of feeders and cloudy...

As you’ll notice in the picture, the treestand sticks out like a sore thumb amid the barren branches. Now picture a 200-pound dude holding a bow or rifle sitting in it. Any deer that has made it through the last two months of season will quickly notice what doesn’t belong and will just as quickly leave. Here are some ideas that...

We are two weeks into the modern gun season now. Many bucks have ridden home in somebody’s truck, the woods are wide open, and the fabled November “Prime Time” is over. Sometimes it’s hard to get motivated for a sit in the woods. No need to get down, there is still opportunity out there. Not all does cycle at the same time...

Tom Kremers of Clarksville added almost a pound and a half to the state-record shortnose gar mark Sept. 23 when he caught one that weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces from the Spadra Creek area of Lake Dardanelle.

When most outdoorsy folks think of autumn they think of deer, ducks, rabbits and squirrels. Some are on the lake chasing crappie and bass but everyone is driving right by one of the most underrated outdoor pursuits of November, farm pond bass.
Living in Arkansas has several advantages for the angler. Arkansas winters are typically mild and...

The stage is set. Rain has come in buckets to the Natural State and every available pond, stream, and pothole has water in it. River Valley duck hunters have reported decent numbers but one ingredient in the recipe for mallards and the bigger ducks has been missing; cold weather. It looks like a good shot of cold weather will be here Saturday...

Trapping is a controversial issue in today’s world. Most of the controversy comes from a lack of information and understanding. At the core of the issue is humane treatment of animals balanced with intelligent management of those animals. Any true outdoorsman and nature lover cringes at the thought of an animal in pain but informed...

Commissioners decided to shorten the 2012 spring turkey season by two days. This was an expected conservative move for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Turkey numbers in Arkansas have been on the decline for the last six years. Blame for the drop in turkey numbers has ranged from very wet springs to an increase in predators to habitat...

Modern gun season is in full swing now. Almost all the leaves are off the trees and the woods are different. The rut is at its peak, which means that we are out of the chase phase and into breeding for the majority of does. There is a definite lull in deer activity right now.
The reasons for this lull are two-fold. The first reason...

Once upon a time in Arkansas there weren’t very many deer, or ducks, or turkeys. Deer camp was for getting away from the wife and hanging out with your buddies. Duck hunting was jump shooting some wood ducks along the creek on your grandpa’s back forty. Spring was for fishing, trying to hunt the pitiful few turkeys around here...
